The Neighbor's Shield

A deep dive into Shroud of the Avatar's Shield school, what twenty-five years of the genre learned about blocking, and thirty-four concrete proposals.

The hoplite's shield covered the left half of its bearer and the right half of the man beside him: the one piece of the panoply that existed for someone else. Shroud's Shield school remembers the idea. Testudo grows stronger for every shield-carrying ally in the wall; Dig In shares its avoidance with the group. And yet the school is the least played thing in Novia. Its six actives were 0.52 percent of all skill casts in the last thirty days, the smallest share of any combat school. Its specialization ranks dead last of all twenty-one adventuring trees: 79 players ever learned it, 24 of them active this year. Testudo has thirteen living users and one of them casts seventy percent of it. The school's one combo was used by exactly one player. Meanwhile nearly every melee character in the game owns a shield. This page is about that gap: the audit of a defense that misfires in its own math, the manual the school never shipped, and thirty-four proposals to give the wall a reason to be manned.

Executive summary

Shield design has a twenty-five-year arc and Ultima Online walked all of it first. In 1997 a shield was flat armor soak, a bigger number on a ladder where the tower was strictly better than the buckler and blocking had no moment. In 2003 Age of Shadows swung to the opposite pole: block became a pure chance to negate, shield type stopped mattering, and a failed roll meant the shield did nothing at all. The rest of the genre spent two decades reconciling those failures. World of Warcraft made block a guaranteed percentage and then made mitigation something you spend for. The Elder Scrolls Online priced blocking in stamina. Guild Wars 2 reduced it to a countable charge. Final Fantasy XIV's own patch notes retreated from chance-block wording to a flat percent. Elden Ring made the block the setup for the counter. The modern consensus is a deterministic baseline, player-controlled spikes, and a block event that produces output. Shroud's shield sits astride the two abandoned extremes at once: a chance roll gating a flat subtraction, with a block event that produces nothing. The reaction system already stamps the time of your last block; not one skill in the game reads it.

Thirty days of live telemetry, the specialization census, the school's complete data surface, a defect audit of the block math, and nine years of forum record put the school's condition in three clusters:

  1. A defense that misfires in its own math. The 75 percent block cap is really a floor in the roll's denominator, and the character sheet displays a cap that does not exist. Ranged Defense, the level-80 innate, multiplies block against player bows and crossbows and nothing else: not spells, not monster archers, not dragon spit, and its tooltip is a word-for-word copy of a different skill's. The entire rear half-circle skips block and parry while doubling the attacker's hit chance. An empty off-hand out-blocks every shield item in the game. Bolster Balance resists stuns at double its authored value. Shield Bash's specialization debuff does nothing against most of the game. The top craftable shield wears out three times faster than the starter shield. Seven defects from this audit were filed this week.
  2. A block that produces nothing, and gear that cannot buy one. A successful block is a silent subtraction: no counter, no proc, no moment, no rotation consequence. The genre converged on the opposite years ago, and the plumbing is already half-built here: the reaction catalog registers the block timestamps with zero consumers anywhere. Itemization compounds the silence. Two of the school's six trained stats are written by no item, masterwork, or enchantment in the game. Exactly two crafted shields grant any block chance at all; the round, triangle, and Acara shields grant none. The shield enchant pool is empty and the shield masterwork pool is the shallowest in the weapon table. Ultima Online's oldest failure, the interchangeable shield, imported whole.
  3. The lonely wall. The school's stated identity is cooperative, and it has no cooperative verb beyond two auras nobody runs. There is no way to guard an ally, the oldest and best idea in shield design. In the community's own "Good Tank Build" thread, nobody recommends the Shield specialization and Testudo is never mentioned; when players asked for a real tank role in 2018, the answer shipped in Heavy Armor. The numbers agree: thirteen Testudo users, seventeen for Dig In, one player carrying the school's only combo, and the top eight casters producing seventy percent of the school's entire volume. This is not a school with an unpopular kit. It is a school with no public.

The deal that runs through all thirty-four proposals: Tier 1 makes the school legible, the block math published, the seven filed defects fixed, the manual corrected, the machine pinned by tests. Tier 2 completes the existing kit, a Deflect with an identity, a Dig In whose ramp actually ramps, a Testudo whose specialization reaches the aura players receive. Tier 3 gives the school its missing verbs: the guarded ally, the guaranteed block, the answered blow, the shield worth choosing. Tier 4 puts the doctrine questions on the owner's desk. First the shield tells the truth; then it learns to answer back.

Where the fences are. Shield gem pools, enchants, masterworks, and named-item ladders belong to the weapons program. Stances, reaction-program architecture, aggro, and offhand rules belong to the Tactics page and its programs. Stun diminishing returns is an owner decision on the Bludgeon page that names this school as an affected party. The ghost Block skill identifier is spent: the Polearms page revives it as the Haft Guard, so every new verb here takes a fresh identifier. Magic shield spells belong to their magic schools. Per-skill numeric retunes ship through the combat balance pass; every number below is an illustrative starting point.

Nearly every melee character owns a shield; about a hundred characters cast a Shield glyph last month, and seventy-nine accounts in the game's history ever bought the school's specialization. The specialization itself is rated mid-tier in payoff, one of the broader improvement sets in the game. The spec is fine. The school under it is what nobody plays.

Nine cards are pure client and content work, eight ship as changesets through the balance program, and the new verbs price out as buff-registry and data work. Seven cards add new skill identifiers, batched into single shared-enum edits; Arcane Defense spent the first of them. Nothing here requires server combat logic, because there is none: combat is computed on the client.

Built so far. Sixteen of the thirty-four cards have shipped: one with this page on 14 August, four on 15 August, and eleven on 25 August. That is the whole truth tier apart from its test suite (S1 through S8), six of the eight kit repairs (S10, S11, S13, S14, S16, S17), one owner ruling (S30), and Arcane Defense (S34), which was asked for after this page was written and is the only card here that began as an owner request rather than an audit finding. Six of the seven defects this audit filed are fixed. Still outstanding in the first two tiers: S9's golden test suite, S12's Dig In ramp, S15's combo discovery, and the S29 and S31 rulings. Every card that has shipped says so and says what actually landed, which is not always what the card asked for.
Section 1

The school today

Twelve skills on the Combat tab: six actives in two short branches off Deflect, five equipment-gated innates in a diamond, and the specialization. The Bash branch controls, the Dig In branch holds ground, and the innate spine stacks resistance, avoidance, durability, and block power. There is also a thirteenth skill the tree never shows: Shield Smash, the combo of Shield Bash and Earth magic's Stone Fist, hinted at by nothing in any interface. And there is a block formula underneath all of it that has never once been shown to a player.

The block event is a dead end. The reaction system stamps the time of every block you make and every block made against you; no skill in the game reads either stamp.

What a shield is allowed to answer

Every attack carries flags that decide which defenses may respond. Decoded from the full rune census, this is the world a shield lives in today:

The flag map is a patchwork of one-off rulings: R26 let spells be blocked, R90 took Lightning back out, and one two-handed blade ships a polearm's flag set and is silently unblockable. Card S31 asks the owner to decide the table on purpose; card S21 is the capstone that widens it for the player who commits to the school.

The school's mechanics live almost entirely in data and one function of client combat math. There is no server-side combat: the server holds identifiers and never learns a player's position, which is why the front-arc test is client-authoritative and why every proposal on this page resolves as a flag, a formula term, a buff, a charge counter, or a timestamp, never as geometry.

Built, fixed, and not re-proposed. The school has had one real attention wave: R86 through R90 added Ranged Defense, gave Deflect its block-power rider and Bolster Balance its crit-damage reduction, stopped crossbows from bypassing shields, and normalized the artifact shields' block values. R94 and R96 fixed Dig In's spec tooltip and buff-bar flicker. The block formula is documented in the project's combat reference. Open tracker items this page cites without re-filing: the Dig In specialization report (#1486), Dig In colliding with the two-buff avoidance cap (#1292), the Ranged Defense tooltip (#1325), Shield Smash's missing stun (#1491), Bolster Balance surviving unequip (#1956), Charge's doubled description (#1467), the empty shield enchant pools (#2550), and the polearm offhand question parked with the Polearms page. Seven new defects were filed from this audit: #4566 through #4572.

What the canon knows

Ultima Online is the ancestor, and it walked both dead ends first. At launch a shield was flat armor rating on a pure ladder, buckler 7 to Chaos shield 32, bigger strictly better, blocking indistinguishable from wearing more armor. Age of Shadows in 2003 abolished the ladder and made Parrying a chance to negate the hit entirely, about thirty percent at grandmaster, and created the opposite failure the same day: shield type stopped mattering at all. The player guides are blunt about it: which shield you carry makes no difference. Twenty years later the live formula is a sprawl in which training Bushido actively subtracts from your shield block, an anti-synergy players still file complaints about. The two lessons this page inherits whole: a shield must be more than armor, and shields must differ from each other, and UO never managed both at once.

Dark Age of Camelot built the deepest shield line the genre has produced, and every piece of it resolves without geometry. Block chance came from shield specialization. Shield size decided how many simultaneous attackers you could block: small one, medium two, tower three, the cleanest answer ever shipped to the interchangeable-shield problem. Slam, at specialization 42, was a nine-second stun entire builds existed to reach. Engage bought thirty percent block against one designated enemy at the price of your entire offense. And Guard, trained at level five, let you stand beside an ally and block the blows aimed at them: the mechanic that made the shield a group role instead of a selfish stat, and the single biggest hole in Shroud's school today. Base block against arrows started at thirty percent, six times the melee base, because a wall of wood is what you raise against the sky going dark.

World of Warcraft ran the full arc on one stat. Block began as a flat value that raid content inflated into irrelevance, blocking two hundred of a twenty-thousand-point hit. Cataclysm made a block a guaranteed thirty percent of the hit and gave Protection warriors a mastery that could critically block for double. Mists of Pandaria completed the pivot to active mitigation: Shield Slam generated the resource and Shield Block spent it, offense funding defense every few seconds, because the designers concluded that a tank's skill should live in choices, not in waiting out a three-minute cooldown. Spell Reflection remains the genre's best statement that shields answer casters. The Elder Scrolls Online made blocking universal and priced it in stamina, a resource conversion rather than a roll, with the One Hand and Shield line tuning the exchange rate; its taunt lives on the shield line, and permablocking became the balance tail it chased for years. Guild Wars 2 reduced the whole question to a boon: Aegis, a charge that blocks the next attack, countable, grantable to allies, deterministic. Final Fantasy XIV gave the paladin a block stat nobody else has, Sheltron to spend a gauge on guaranteed blocks, Cover to take an ally's hits, and Passage of Arms, the party-wide shield wall; by patch 6.3 its notes had quietly rewritten chance-block into a flat percent. New World added the smallest good idea on this page: block an attack, gain a Fortify stack. The block event produces something.

The action lineage is where blocking finally felt good. Dark Souls made the shield's real stat stability, how much stamina each caught blow costs, with per-damage-type negation turning shield choice into a build decision, and a guard break with teeth when the resource ran dry. Elden Ring added the Guard Counter: the block is not the end of the exchange, it is the wind-up for the answer, and two or three of them stagger most bosses. Monster Hunter's lance blocks as a way of attacking, and its Guard Up skill does something very specific to this page's interests: it flips otherwise-unblockable attacks into blockable ones, a designed override of exactly the kind of flag Shroud's combat already runs on. And tabletop supplied the action-economy verdict: D&D's 2024 rules made the shield bash a free rider on the attack you were already making, because a decade of play proved that a small shield attack that competes for the action slot never gets used. Shroud's deck is the same economy, and Shield Bash sits in it today exactly where the bonus-action bash sat.

The imagery the school already owns

The aspis covered the man beside you; the phalanx was a machine built from that overlap, and its collapse began the moment one man's nerve broke the line. The Roman testudo, the school's own late-game verb by name, was the anti-missile formation: a box of shields raised against the arrow storm. The Norse skjaldborg was shallower and looser, individual shields locked at need. In every telling the shield is the communal weapon, the one you carry for the line, and Shroud's Testudo already computes exactly that: its aura grows per shield-carrying ally in the wall. The mechanic is faithful. It has thirteen players. The stories also supply the missing verb this page keeps circling: standing over the fallen, taking the blow meant for another. The school that owns Testudo has no way to guard a single ally, and that is the strangest absence in its kit.

What this page deliberately does not import. Directional and timed blocking: no server positions exist and the client has no action timing; Age of Conan tried allocation-based directions and its own players ignored the interface. Held-block resource stances: the held-guard pattern in this game is spent, claimed by the Polearms page's Haft Guard. Guard-break posture stacks: the Blades page owns that ground. Stun diminishing returns: an owner decision on the Bludgeon page. Block-triggered card draw: the Focus page's Mental Reflex owns the block-to-draw hook, and this page routes around it on purpose.

Cell judgments worth defending: SotA's published-math cell is empty even though the project's own reference documents the formula, because no player-facing surface does. The blocks-spells cell is half full: bolt spells carry the flag, but the anti-ranged innate ignores them and two lightning spells were removed from the table by hand. The stun cell stays half full in the proposed column on purpose: a marquee stun without diminishing returns is a trap, and that decision belongs to the Bludgeon page's owner card. The enemies-with-shields row is the quiet one: fighting a thing teaches it, and nothing in Novia blocks.

The thirty-four proposals

The truth wave. Seven defects from this page's audit were filed this week (#4566 through #4572); this tier fixes them, publishes the block math for the first time, corrects the manual, and pins the machine in tests before any later card moves a number.

S1 · The book matches the shield

Built 2026-08-14. The school reference document was rewritten alongside this page: sixteen corrections, from three innate tables computed off by their own starting term, to the "escalating" specialization bonus that is really a single five-second blip, to a line claiming Charge needs line of sight in a game with no line-of-sight gate. Shield Smash, absent from the document entirely, got its chapter.

The corrections that matter most to a player: block power is a multiplier, not a flat add, so Stand Your Ground at level 100 doubles the shield's stopping power. The specialization's real level-100 value is 1.25, not 1.24. Ranged Defense helped only against bows and crossbows, and Testudo's specialization widened the wrong radius; S16 and S13 have since fixed both, and the document moved with them. Dig In's group share is a single application, not a per-second pulse, and its allies keep the buff after stepping away. The document now says what the data does.

Built 2026-08-25. The character sheet's Block row prints the chance the roll actually gives, and its hover explains it: the block modifier and what each point buys, the damage one block stops split into the shield's share and Strength's share, the 75 percent ceiling and the hit size where it stops binding, the Ranged Defense bonus when trained, and the rule that attacks from behind or on a knocked-down defender cannot be blocked. Parry's hover states its computed chance the same way. Every block-modifier buff, Deflect's two windows, Dig In's specialization rider and Shield Smash, gains a line reading "Block chance 76.2% while this lasts, 60% without it". The front-arc wording states the rule as it is today; S29 can reword it. Not on the test shard yet.

In 2016 a player opened a thread asking whether one point of block modifier is one percent, whether a block stops some damage or all of it, and whether facing matters. The thread ran eight months and never got an answer, because the game has never published the formula anywhere a player can see. This card puts it on the surfaces that count: the character sheet shows real block chance and real damage stopped against a sample hit, the buff bar shows what Deflect's windows are each worth, and the tooltip says out loud that a block is a reduction with a 75 percent ceiling, front arc only.

Seen in: every modern MMO in the matrix; the opacity is the outlier. Asked by Warin, hroth, Jaanelle DeJure and Leinad Laurelwreath in the 2016 thread that never got its answer.

The character sheet's Block and Parry rows now print the roll's own curve with no clamp, so a modifier of 120 reads 82.8% instead of 75%, and both hovers describe the soft cap in words (one percent per point up to 75, diminishing returns past it, never reaching 100). A regression fence pins the curve, that nothing below 75 moved, and that the roll and the sheet read the same helper. The asymptote's shape stays S29/S30's question. Not on the test shard yet.

The constant in the block roll is named as a maximum and acts as a minimum. At a block modifier of 120, real chance is 82.8 percent and still climbing toward 100; the character sheet says 75. The same structure sits under parry. The honest fix keeps the code and repairs the story: the soft cap is actually a reasonable curve, chance that grows forever with diminishing returns, so document it, display the true value, and delete the fictional ceiling. Capping the roll for real would take shipped power away from block stackers, which this page's rules forbid.

Seen in: WoW's diminishing-return curves on avoidance, published and understood; the difference is that theirs were announced.

Character sheet displays the computed chance with no clamp; loc strings describe the soft-cap curve. The parry display gets the same fix in the same pass. Regression case in S9 pins the roll's shape either way. The one open question, whether the asymptote is the intended shape, is S29/S30's desk.

S4 · One buff, counted twice

Built 2026-08-15. The buff was re-authored instead of the code being changed. The resistance now writes to the crowd control channel alone and the amount was doubled, so the effective resistance against stuns, knockdowns and knockbacks is exactly what players already had, and roots came up to the same figure instead of staying at half. Nobody's character got weaker. A later balance review asked whether doubling the authored number was the right way to hold the effective value steady, given that it also doubled resistance to roots, and that question is still open.

Bolster Balance at skill 100 is authored to resist crowd control at 35 percent. Against stuns, knockdowns and knockbacks it actually resists at 70, because the consumer adds the crowd-control channel and the specific channel together and the buff wrote the same number to both. Against roots it is 35, as authored. The same buff is silently twice as strong against half the list. The fix is a re-authoring, not a nerf: set the channels so the effective values match what players have today, and write those real numbers on the tooltip. Nobody's character gets weaker; the label stops being wrong.

Seen in: the Confusion resistance fix earlier this year (#4462), the same double-count shape, already repaired once elsewhere in the file.

Implementation notes

Asset-side: split the resistance mask so per-type values are explicit at today's effective levels. Ships as a balance changeset against the S9 pins with before/after equality asserted at skill 1, 50, 100. Tooltip states per-category values. S5 · The debuff that debuffs nothing

Base avoidance and equipment avoidance are combined as one number now and clamped once at the end, so Shield Bash's specialization debuff subtracts from armor-derived avoidance the way its tooltip always promised. The same line had been truncating the base stat to a whole number, which rounded Redirection's contribution away to nothing below skill 10. It rounds once at the end now.

Shield Specialization's payoff on Shield Bash is a damage-avoidance debuff on the target. The stat is floored at zero before armor-derived avoidance is counted, and creatures carry zero in the stat, so against most of the game the debuff does exactly nothing at maximum investment, while the tooltip advertises it. Fix the order of operations so the debuff can eat equipment avoidance, and the specialization's one offensive rider starts existing. The same line hides a second bug: fractional avoidance is truncated to whole numbers, so Redirection's own passive contributes literally nothing until skill 10.

Seen in: every debuff that works. Shadow's 2021 worry that shields are "the very bottom of the list" for a spec slot starts exactly here, at a payoff that does not pay.

Implementation notes

Move the zero-clamp after equipment aggregation (or apply the debuff to the aggregate), and drop the integer truncation. Touches the shared avoidance read used by all attacks, so S9's pins land first and the change ships as its own changeset with glancing-rate before/after measurements.

S6 · The shield that wears out first

The best craftable shield in the game takes three times the durability damage of the tier-1 round shield, because its multiplier field holds a 1 where every comparable shield holds a 3, and its own plus-durability sibling is correctly authored. One number. Separately, one cabalist shield's durability stat is authored at negative one, which the safety clamp turns into a ten-times wear rate. Both are data fixes, both strictly in the player's favor, and both feed the school's one durability passive, which currently protects a shield that random chance rarely selects for damage anyway.

Seen in: nothing; this is not a mechanic, it is a typo with a nine-year tenure. The deeper durability-cliff question belongs to the Armor page.

S7 · Labels that stop lying

Built 2026-08-25. Ranged Defense has a picture of its own. It had worn the Angles glyph since it shipped, so two rows of the shield tree drew the same shield, and the new art is a gold shield turning arrows, in both the classic and the modern icon sets. Dig In now says the two things it never said: it holds you in place and ends the moment you move, and the specialization bonus it grants is a brief one. Most of the rest of this card had already been fixed by the description pass on 15 August, including the Stand Your Ground text and the doubled stun line, and Shield Smash's earth damage went the other way, with the damage typed as earth rather than the sentence removed. Its knockback turned out to be real as well, tucked away in a piece of the skill that is easy to miss, so that sentence stayed too. One thing is deliberately left: Ranged Defense still says "a ranged attack" where it means arrows and bolts, and card S16 changes the rule and the wording together.

Ranged Defense promises stun resistance it does not grant, because its tooltip is a word-for-word copy of a different skill's (#1325, filed in 2021 and still open), and it has worn Angles' icon since it shipped because no icon was ever made for it. Shield Smash's tooltip claims earth damage and a knockback chance; the asset carries neither. The specialization claims to improve every active in the tree; two effects have no specialization term at all. Charge's description lists its stun twice (#1467). Plus the small stuff: "Immeidately," "Modifer," and Deflect describing a trigger that does not exist. One localization pass, one new icon.

Seen in: the same tooltip-truth card on every sibling page; the school with the fewest players still deserves labels that tell the truth.

S8 · What the innates cannot stop

Angles now reads that its damage resistance reduces damage from weapon attacks and does not reduce spell damage; Redirection reads that its glancing chance applies to physical attacks and that a spell is resisted by your attunement instead. The character sheet carries the same scope on its Damage Resistance and Damage Avoidance rows, so the number and the sentence agree wherever a player meets them. A fence pins the code against both sentences: the resistance is subtracted in the weapon-damage path and nowhere else, and the avoidance is added to the glancing roll only in the physical branch, so changing either one turns the fence red and the label has to move with it. One precision the card above flattens: a weapon skill that deals magic damage, Shield Smash among them, still runs the weapon-damage path, so both innates do work against it. What they are worth nothing against is a spell. No number changed. The wider question, whether a shield school should answer magic at all, is recorded for the balance program with this page's recommendation attached: through the shield's own block, in S21 and S25, not by widening a passive. Angles and Redirection are the school's resistance spine, and both are physical-only: the resistance total is consulted only by melee damage, and avoidance feeds the glancing roll only for physical hits. A fire mage's target gets nothing from either, at any level, and neither tooltip carries a qualifier. Say it on the label now, and route the real question, whether a shield school's passives should help against a fireball at all, to the balance program with this page's recommendation attached: they should, and the bolt-blocking work in S21 and S25 is where the school's magic answer actually lives.

Before any card below changes a number: a golden suite that pins the seven rune assets' expressions, cooldown pairs and equipment gates, the sixteen specialization terms, the innate value table, and the block math itself as unit cases: the roll's floor-as-cap shape, the front-arc skip, the empty-hand fallback, the bow-only ranged branch, the 75 percent damage ceiling, and the double-counted resistance. Plus the first Blockable-flag coverage sweep, pinning the per-family manifest so that when S31 changes the table, the change is a deliberate diff instead of a drift.

The card text now says the long window outlasts the cooldown, so the smaller bonus can be held up between casts. Not on the test shard yet.

Every other active in the school rewards a locked deck slot with half its cooldown. Deflect, the school's front door and most-cast skill, gets nothing, and its long window already outlasts its own cooldown, so the skill is really a permanent buff wearing a four-second spike on top. Give it the school-standard discount, and let the tooltip present the skill as what it is: a maintained stance with a burst you time. The two windows become two labeled lines instead of one number that describes neither.

Seen in: the Tactics page finding the identical missing discount on Parry; two schools' front doors, same forgotten key.

Implementation notes

S11 · Specialization you can feel before 80

Bolster Balance's dexterity bonus and Shield Bash's damage avoidance debuff used to be all or nothing, worth zero without Shield Specialization and worth 10 at mastery 80, with the tooltip line hidden entirely while the number was zero. They now start at 2 and add 10 per point of mastery, so an unspecced player gets 2 and sees the line, mastery 40 gets 7 where it used to get 5, and mastery 80 gets 12 where it used to get 10. Every value at every mastery is the old one plus a flat 2, so nobody who bought the specialization lost anything. Both descriptions were reworded to say the rider is always there and grows with the specialization. Not on the test shard yet.

Two of the specialization's riders are boolean cliffs: zero effect without the spec, full effect with it, and the tooltip hides the line entirely until you own it, so the player deciding whether to buy the school's specialization cannot see half of what it does. Convert both gates to gradients with a small unspecced baseline that mastery multiplies past today's values. Strictly upward for everyone specced, newly visible for everyone else, and the tooltip shows the line with your current number, even when it is small.

Seen in: the Bludgeon page's gradient card, the same repair. Shadow asked in 2021 whether a Shield spec slot is a wasted slot; a spec whose effects are invisible until purchased answers that question badly.

Chance terms become baseline-plus-mastery expressions; the zero-chance tooltip suppression flag flips so the lines always render. Values chosen so specced output at 80 is unchanged or better. One changeset, two assets.

S12 · The ramp that never ramped

Dig In's specialization bonus is authored as a block bonus that grows every second the stance is held. As shipped, it applies once, for five seconds, and never grows: the expression's tick counter never advances because the effect only ever has one tick. A 2019 player report said specialized Dig In does not seem to increase block; this is why. Fix the tick plumbing so the authored ramp runs for the stance's real duration with a stated cap, and the school's most committed play pattern, planting your feet, finally pays for the commitment.

Seen in: Monster Hunter's Power Guard, the omnidirectional turtle with a real payoff; and in #1486, which this card cites as its origin. Jackblack's 2020 verdict, "dig in appears pretty rubbish as it stops you doing anything," is the review the ramp was supposed to answer.

Implementation notes

Tick count follows the stance duration at one tick per five seconds; amount capped at the authored formula's natural ceiling. Discloses the rider's aggro term (50, the school's largest) on the tooltip. The two-buff avoidance-cap collision with Glancing Blow and Shield of Ice is cited (#1292) and left to the owner: the cap is a game-wide rule. The permanent-immobilize history (#1785, fixed) is test-pinned, not reopened.

S13 · Testudo rescued

Built 2026-08-25. The first repair turned out to be larger than this card guessed. The specialization's radius bonus was not pointed at the wrong thing, it was pointed at a number nothing in the game reads, so Shield Specialization had done nothing whatsoever for Testudo since the skill shipped. It now widens the reach that decides who is inside the wall and the two radii that decide how many shields count, taking a fully specialized wall from eight metres to sixteen. The resistance an ally receives is now the same formula as the caster's, after retiring a term that referenced a stat nothing writes. And the buff bar finally says how many shields are standing in the wall, which is the number the skill is named for. The movement penalty is untouched, as promised. Not on the test shard yet.

30 days live: 1,204 casts, 13 players, one player 70% of the volume; the spec widens the carrier volume, not the aura; the formation bonus is invisible; one referenced stat has no writer in the game

Testudo is the school's fantasy made mechanical: allies in your wall gain damage resistance, and the value grows for every shield-bearing ally present. Thirteen people use it. Three repairs, no redesign. First, point the specialization's radius bonus at the aura allies actually receive instead of the invisible carrier volume around it. Second, put the formation math on the buff bar: "+2 per shielded ally (currently 3)" turns the school's best-kept secret into its best advertisement. Third, resolve the dead stat: the ally formula references a Testudo-resistance stat nothing in the game writes; give the specialization a small term there so the self and ally formulas finally converge, or delete it. The movement penalty stays untouched: it is the identity, and a masterwork already exists to relieve it.

Seen in: FFXIV's Passage of Arms and the testudo itself, the shield roof raised over other people. Crendel, one of the thirteen: "I find myself using the shield more (Testudo)."

Implementation notes

Move the mastery term from the trigger volume's group radius to the resistance effect's; buff-bar string with the live ally count from the formation term; the dead stat gains its one specialization writer (strictly additive) or is retired with its display string. Slow channel untouched per the contended-channel fence.

S14 · Charge earns its tier

Built 2026-08-25. Charge hits for four fifths of a weapon swing instead of half, the same coefficient Body Slam carries in Heavy Armor, which is the same skill shape on a shorter cooldown. That still leaves it under every pure strike in the other melee schools, which is the trade for carrying the school's best stun. The larger find was not the number. The rush was gated in data on the caster's own root state, and because the damage, the stun and the knockdown all hang off that one effect, a rooted character lost the entire card, its focus and its cooldown with nothing to show for any of it. Root was already handled correctly in two other places, so the gate only ever took things away. The tooltip already printed the damage and the doubled stun line had already been fixed, so neither needed doing twice. Not on the test shard yet.

Charge is the school's most exciting verb and its most anticlimactic arrival: rush ten meters, deliver a stun worth building around, and deal damage players measured at one point. The half-swing coefficient collapses against real armor. Route a tier-3-worthy coefficient through the balance program, print the computed damage on the tooltip instead of a description that lists the stun twice, and state the two fail cases players discover by surprise: rooted casters do not move, and the ten-meter reach is the whole leash. The stun itself is already excellent and already specialization-scaled; its future size belongs to the stun desk in S32.

Seen in: ESO's Shield Charge and New World's Shield Rush, both of which arrive with real damage. Cebrimal filed the one-damage report in 2017; By Tor grandmastered it and stayed underwhelmed; belijaal asked for more range or more stun. The thread got no answer.

S15 · The combo one player knows

Shield Smash is what happens when Shield Bash and Earth magic's Stone Fist are slotted together: a shield strike that stacks block and earth attunement, with both specializations raising the cap. It is the school's only combo, one of exactly two skills in the game whose formulas read two masteries at once, and its entire living population is one person. Three fixes: a discovery line on both parent tooltips, so the recipe is knowable inside the game; the stun made to land, which is #1491's four-year-old ask; and the label matched to the data, since the tooltip promises earth damage and a knockback the asset does not contain. Author the knockback for real, its sibling effect on Shield Bash is right there to copy, or drop the claim; this page recommends authoring it.

Seen in: every combo system with a discovery surface; the specialization deep dive flagged this exact pair, and its Fire sibling FlamingBash, as content "nothing in any UI hints exists."

Implementation notes

Combo-hint line on ShieldBash and StoneFist tooltips (FlamingBash gets the same line from its parents in the same pass); the stun fix rides #1491's verify chain; focus cost gains the school's standard shield term for consistency. Loc corrections land in S7's file pass.

S16 · Ranged Defense made real

Built 2026-08-25. Ranged Defense answers everything thrown at you, not just arrows and bolts from a player's bow. The innate used to need either a ranged weapon in the attacker's hands or an attack somebody had remembered to label as ranged, and creature attacks are labelled by hand and mostly labelled wrong: a troll's thrown rock is filed as hand-to-hand, a scorpion's spit as poison. Re-labelling them would have changed the creatures' own accuracy and how the rest of combat treats their attacks, so the shield reads how the attack arrives instead. Anything thrown, spat or shot at you now counts, whoever throws it. Magic still does not, which leaves the school's answer to spellcasters where Arcane Defense put it and moves nothing in the blockable table. The skill description says all of this now, which is the wording S7 deliberately left for this card. One piece of housekeeping rode along: the two places the damage code subtracts a block had drifted apart, and only one of them was reading the ranged bonus at all.

The school's level-80 anti-ranged innate multiplies blocked damage only when the attacker's weapon is literally a bow or crossbow item. A skeleton archer whose bow is data rather than an item, a dragon's spit, an elemental's bolt: all bypass it. The R86 notes said shields would become "significantly more effective against non-magical ranged attacks"; the honest scope is exactly that promise, extended to every non-magical ranged attack regardless of who fires it or whether their weapon is an item. Spells stay out, that doctrine belongs to S31, and the stat joins the character sheet's block readout so the innate's owner can finally see it working.

Seen in: DAoC, where base block against arrows was thirty percent before specialization, six times the melee base; the anti-archer role is the shield's oldest job. The testudo on this page's hero image is doing it.

Implementation notes

Gate on the attack's ranged damage bit rather than the attacker's item type, excluding magic-school damage; consolidate the near-duplicate block-reduction path while in the file. Character sheet line added. Ships against S9's bow-branch pin with before/after cases for creature archers.

S17 · The broken-shield seam

Built 2026-08-25. Breaking your shield is visible. Three separate pieces of code decided what having a shield meant and they disagreed, so a shield reaching zero durability switched off all six of the school's passive skills while the shield-gated halves of Deflect, Bolster Balance, Dig In and Testudo carried on as if nothing had happened. They agree now, which does mean a broken shield costs you those four as well. The top-right warning row gained an icon that names every passive the broken gear has suspended, and skill tooltips say plainly that their numbers assume the required equipment, with a blunter line when the equipment is there and broken. Fighting without a shield deliberately does not raise the warning: that is a choice, and the tooltip already shows the requirement unmet. The card counted five suspended passives; it is six now, Arcane Defense having landed the same day.

Three different pieces of code decide what "having a shield" means, and they disagree. The cast gate refuses a broken shield; the formula token accepts one; tooltip previews assume one is always there. And when a shield breaks mid-fight, all five equipment-gated innates, the school's entire passive spine, vanish silently: no message, no buff-bar change, nothing. Align the three gates on one definition, and give the broken state a voice: a "passives suspended" indicator when the shield that carries your tree hits zero. The repair-kit habit becomes a decision the game supports instead of a trap it hides.

Seen in: Pathfinder's shield denting, where the shield's condition is the mechanic and the player always knows it. The Bolster-Balance-survives-unequip bug (#1956) was this seam's first symptom; the seam itself never closed.

Implementation notes

Token learns the broken check the cast gate already does; preview mode keeps its optimistic value but tooltips label shield-gated lines. Buff-bar indicator driven by the equipment-state cache. Durability-cliff economics stay with the Armor page's card; this is gate consistency only.

Every verb resolves as a flag, a buff, a charge, or a timestamp, because the server knows no positions and never will for this work.

Target a party member and raise your shield for them. While the link holds, blockable attacks against your shieldmate roll your block chance at a reduced rate, and a successful guard sends part of the blow to you instead of them. The link is a buff with a duration; it breaks if you are stunned, knocked down, or dead, because a guard who cannot stand guards nothing. This is the school's stated identity, the neighbor's shield, finally made into a verb: the healer who stops eating pulls, the fresh player walked through a dungeon behind a veteran's board, the escort that means something.

A target-scoped buff link: new skill identifier, one new stat for the redirect fraction, applied as a buff on the guarded ally referencing the guard's entity. The block roll on the guarded target consults the guard's modifier when the link is live. S19 · The answered blow

Built 2026-08-28. The rune is named Answering Blow and sits off Deflect at 40. The window is two seconds, stretched toward four and a half by Shield Specialization: Riposte parity rather than the four-second base this card sketched, because the parry window was cut in August for being too long and the block window starts where that ruling ended. Inside the window the strike lands at double melee damage, ignores armor, and cannot be blocked, dodged or parried; it also knocks the target off balance, a damage avoidance debuff held for four seconds that grows with specialization. Outside the window it is the weak consolation swing, the same shape Riposte uses. The off-balance is deliberately not a stun or a knockdown, so the fortitude walls bosses now raise against chained control never eat it. No new gating code exists anywhere in this: the block timestamp was already stamped on every block with nothing reading it, and the whole skill is data on that stamp. The reaction catalog's pinned set names five runes now, and the boundary equality that guards Riposte guards this one the same way.

A shield strike that is only live in the seconds after your shield speaks: usable within four seconds of a successful block, scaling with mastery, hitting hard and off-balancing the target. The game already has the pattern, Riposte is a Blades rune that unlocks off the parry timestamp, and it already stamps every block; this is the first skill in the game to read that stamp. The block event stops being a silent subtraction and becomes the beginning of the school's sentence: they swing, the shield answers, the answer has an edge on it.

Seen in: Elden Ring's Guard Counter, two or three of which stagger most bosses; Monster Hunter's counter thrust; the entire genre's convergence on block-into-payoff. The window is authored longer than an action game's because deck draw is the pacing here, not reflexes.

An active that grants two or three charges: while a charge remains, the next blockable hit against you is blocked, no roll, and the charge is spent. Deterministic defense for the moments that matter, layered over the passive roll rather than replacing it: save the charges for the troll's overhead or spend them pushing through a door. At higher rank the charges can be cast onto an ally, which alongside S18 completes the school's protective grammar: guard the person, or guard their next three seconds.

Seen in: Guild Wars 2's Aegis, the boon that blocks the next attack; FFXIV's Sheltron; every game that learned players forgive a chance roll when they also own a certainty. The 2016 opacity thread's real complaint was never the math, it was that nothing about blocking was ever certain.

Implementation notes

Charges ride the stack-count machinery the Shield Smash buffs already use; the block gate checks the charge buff before rolling and consumes on success. Unblockable attacks still ignore it, that boundary belongs to S21/S31 and the card says so on its tooltip. New identifier; tree: tier 3 off Bolster Balance 40.

The school's true capstone: ranks that let your shield answer categories it cannot answer today. First rank, thrown and spat projectiles; second, ground-effect ticks at reduced value; at the cap, spell bolts, at a focus cost per caught spell. Monster Hunter ships exactly this skill, a flag override named Guard Up, and Shroud's combat is flag-checks all the way down, so the mechanic is native here in a way it is nowhere else in the genre. The polearm exemption is not touched: whether shields should ever answer polearms is the Polearms page's doctrine card, and this one stays out of its lane.

Seen in: Monster Hunter's Guard Up; ESO's Absorb Magic; WoW's Spell Reflection lineage. The testudo was the anti-missile formation; this is the school remembering what the name means.

An innate: every successful block grants a stack of Bulwark, a few points of damage resistance and a visible mark on the buff bar, up to five, refreshed by each new block and fading a few seconds after the shield goes quiet. A bad streak of rolls delays the ramp instead of wasting the shield; a good streak turns the wall warm. More important than the numbers: every block now leaves a trace a player can see, which is half of what the school has been missing. The passive roll finally has a face.

Seen in: New World's block-grants-Fortify passive; Elden Ring's Barricade Shield; the smoothing trick every designer reaches for once chance-block frustration is measured.

S23 · A shield worth choosing

Today a shield is chosen the way Tirrag described in 2021: "the round has 2 sheets," the material math, because the defensive stats barely differ and block chance mostly is not there. This card proposes the axis instead of the ladder: bucklers block often and stop less, with cheaper, faster shield actives; towers block rarely and stop nearly everything, best against ranged, at a real speed cost; heaters hold the middle. Every class keeps a reason to exist in some fight, which is what Ultima Online's collapse into interchangeability never recovered. The school-side piece is the formula terms that read the class; the item rows themselves route through the weapons program, whose shield gem and masterwork gaps are already on its books.

Seen in: DAoC's small, medium and large shields blocking one, two, or three attackers; Dark Souls' weight classes. Violet Ronso, 2021: "Block Power is the best stat on shields, usually," a stat no shield item in the game can roll. Warrior B'Patrick's craftable wooden shields ask rides the same rework.

A blocked axe and a blocked firebolt currently subtract the same number. Let the block read the shield: the stopped amount scales by the shield's own resistance profile against the incoming damage type, so an iron tower drinks steel and flinches at flame, and an enchanted kite does the reverse. Players already swap magic shields by element, Violet Ronso's tank thread recommends exactly that, so the grammar exists in the playerbase; this extends it to the school's own mechanic and gives the crafting programs a real axis to fill.

Seen in: Dark Souls and Elden Ring, where per-type negation is the shield's build identity; post-AoS UO's five resists, the axis it built and then wasted.

Implementation notes

S25 · Absorb the bolt

A short active: for its window, the next incoming spell above a meaningful size is drunk by the shield, damage absorbed, a share returned as focus. One spell, then the window closes. This is the school's first and only word against casters, deliberately absorb rather than reflect, reflection is a duel-warping swing this page does not want to own, and deliberately thresholded so a trivial damage tick cannot waste the window. It answers the oldest imbalance in the kit: a school named for the thing you raise against incoming fire, with no verb for incoming fire.

Seen in: ESO's Absorb Magic, the safer half of WoW's Spell Reflection lineage; GW2's absorption domes. The magic-school shield spells are their own pages' business; this is the mundane shield's answer, and it shares no channel with them.

S26 · The shield wall

The capstone above Testudo: raise the wall. For its duration every party member takes reduced damage and shares a slice of your block chance against blockable ranged attacks, and at higher rank each ally under the wall receives one Aegis charge. A long cooldown and a real moment, the button a group remembers: the dragon turns, the wall goes up, the arrows rattle off it. Testudo remains the sustained formation stance; this is the emergency the stance was named after, and the two together give the school what tank kits call a raid cooldown, which it has never had.

Seen in: FFXIV's Passage of Arms; the testudo and the skjaldborg themselves. The Polearms page's phalanx card is the passive per-ally innate on the spear side; this is the shield side's active, and the two cite each other rather than compete.

Implementation notes

Party-scoped buff, no geometry: the positional clause of its inspirations is replaced by duration and cooldown, stated plainly. Grants ride the S20 charge machinery at rank two. New identifier; prerequisite Testudo 80. Numbers deliberately modest, party-wide reduction is the most homogenizing stat in group play and the balance program owns the final values.

S27 · The bash that costs nothing

An innate: every third successful block answers by itself, a reflexive bash whose damage scales off the shield's own armor rating and block power, with a brief off-balance. Investing in defense becomes investing in offense with no deck slot spent, the fix D&D's 2024 revision shipped for exactly this problem after a decade of unused bonus-action bashes, and the scaling source is EverQuest's oldest good idea, the bash that hits as hard as the shield is strong. The manual Shield Bash stays, and S19's counter is the amplified, chosen version; this is the school's idle animation growing teeth.

Nothing in the game blocks except players, and few of them. Kobold shield-bearers, town guards, bone knights with heater shields: all hold props. Seed a modest block chance on the humanoid archetypes that visibly carry shields, and the mechanic starts teaching itself, players watch their own blows glance off a raised board and learn what the stat does before they ever train it. Combat is computed on the client, so this is creature-data work, no new systems, and the creature balance pass's target rails keep the time-to-kill drift honest.

Seen in: every action game in the matrix, where the first shield you meet is the enemy's; DAoC and WoW both taught blocking by doing it to you first.

Implementation notes

Block-modifier values on shield-carrying humanoid creature archetypes, small and tiered by rank; any creature-family gating uses mask tests, never equality, per the established trap. Five decisions only the owner can make. Each is written as the question, the evidence, and the options, and several earlier cards state which way their wording bends once the ruling lands.

S29 · The front arc ruling

defect #4568: behind is a full half-circle that skips block and parry and doubles hit chance; the glancing layer ignores it; the tweak meant to reconcile them has no readers

Should facing gate the shield at all? Today "behind" is everything past your shoulders, it switches off block and parry entirely while doubling the attacker's accuracy, the avoidance layer disagrees and ignores facing completely, a knocked-down defender cannot block but a stunned one can, and the whole test runs on the client because the server has no positions. The wiki teaches the rule; a 2018 bug report shows players experiencing the opposite. Two coherent stories are available: keep the arc, tighten it to a true rear cone, make every defensive layer respect it, and publish it; or drop it, block everywhere, and price the power elsewhere. The page recommends the first, the arc is the shield's realism and the pack-fight positioning game is worth having, but it must be one story everywhere it appears.

S30 · The empty hand that blocks better

Built 2026-08-15. The desk went the other way from this card's recommendation. Rather than raising shield values above the fallback line, the fallback was removed: an empty off-hand contributes no shield rating at all, so a bare hand no longer out-blocks a tower shield at any level. Bare-hand blockers still block, and still stop what Strength stops, which is the amount a dual-wielder's off-hand weapon already gave. Raising shield values stays open as S23's and the weapons program's ground.

defect #4569: with no off-hand item the block formula substitutes a value that passes every shield in the game at adventurer level 71 and keeps growing

The block-amount formula's fallback for an empty off-hand scales with adventurer level and overtakes the best shield in the game before level cap; one relic sword grants block chance from the main hand; a dual-wielder's off-hand weapon zeroes the shield term entirely. The result is the page's headline: a bare hand blocks harder than a tower shield. The fallback almost certainly predates shields carrying block chance at all, but unwinding it is a genuine ruling, because reducing the fallback takes shipped power from existing no-shield block builds, which this page's own rules forbid, while raising shield values above the fallback line is the upward path S23 and the weapons program already own. The page recommends the upward path and says so; the desk decides.

The Blockable flag is the shield's entire jurisdiction, and nobody has ever decided it as a table. Spells became blockable in R26; two lightning spells were removed by hand in R90; ground effects were never flagged; the school's own attacks cannot be blocked; a two-handed elven blade ships a polearm's flag set and is silently unblockable. This card asks the owner to rule the table by category, melee, thrown, bolt, ground, breath, the mirror match, and let the S9 manifest test enforce it forever after. The polearm row is already ruled elsewhere: that school's page owns its own exemption doctrine, and this table inherits whatever it decides.

S32 · The stun desk

The school's crowd control is real, Charge at level 100 with masterworks approaches a three-quarters stun chance with specialization-stretched duration, and every ambition beyond it runs through a decision that belongs to another page: the Bludgeon dive's owner call on stun diminishing returns and the break-bar question. This card is the school's brief to that desk: its stuns participate in whatever regime lands there; a DAoC-Slam-grade marquee stun for shields is deliberately parked until diminishing returns exist to price it; and Stand Your Ground's stun resistance should be named in that ruling's counterplay column, because the school that causes stuns is also the school trained to shrug them off.

Seen in: DAoC's Slam, the nine-second RvR stun whole builds chased, and the twenty years of CC-immunity design it forced. By Tor asked in 2017 for longer Charge stuns; the honest answer is "after diminishing returns," and that answer lives on the other page.

S33 · The armored caster's bill

Yipp measured it in 2018: casting with a shield cost about a fifth of their healing output in exchange for half again more damage resistance, plus a flat ten percent fizzle on everything. Is the sword-and-board caster, the battle cleric, the warded mage, an archetype this game wants, or a tax it charges? If an archetype: the relief lives in itemization, fizzle-reduction gems and casting-focused shields in the pools the weapons program already knows are empty, and in the Wicked King's tradeoff design, which was this idea done on purpose. If a tax: say so on the shield tooltips and let players budget honestly. The page recommends archetype; the desk rules; either way the current silence is the worst version.

S34 · A shield against magic

Built 2026-08-25. Arcane Defense, a new innate off Stand Your Ground at 80, lets a shield turn aside a spell. The reason a shield never did anything against a caster turned out not to be a rule anybody wrote: there is no physical-versus-magic branch in the block code at all. Blocking is gated on a single label an author sets per attack, and almost no spell carries it. The new skill opens that same roll to magic that carries no label, counting a growing share of your blocking power against it: about seventy percent of it at skill 100, and all of it at the cap. Spells that could already be blocked keep the rate they had, so no character got worse, and no attack's label was changed, which leaves the wider question of what should be blockable where it belongs. A shard-wide dial can turn the whole thing down or off without a client patch.

This is the school's answer to the complaint that runs through every sword-and-board thread since 2018: that a shield is dead weight the moment the enemy stops swinging. It is deliberately the narrow version of that answer. It moves the chance to block, not the damage a block stops; it never touches an attack's own label, so nothing about cover or the blockable table moves with it; and it is strictly upward, which the rest of this page's cards are held to as well.

Seen in: the shield-mage thread Yipp, Crendel and Baratan ran in 2018, and every game in the canon where a raised shield means something to a caster. Distinct from S21, which widens what counts as blockable at a focus cost and is still waiting on the S31 ruling, and from S25, which is a charge rather than a passive.

Worth noticing: the from-behind line stays, because the mockup shows the constraint instead of hiding it, whichever way S29 rules. The guard line names its price, a redirected reduced share, because a guard without a cost is an aura. And the Testudo line finally says the number the formation earns, which today is computed faithfully and shown to no one.

Constraints this page honors

Combat is computed on the client; the server holds identifiers and no player positions, so nothing here proposes geometry, server-side facing, or line-of-sight, and the front-arc test is named as client-authoritative wherever it appears. The line-of-sight gate is a separately parked owner decision this page does not touch. The ghost Block identifier is spent by the Polearms page. No shipped number gets smaller; every specialization change is strictly upward at rank 80. All final numbers ship through the combat balance program against pinned tests. New identifiers are appends, batched, mirrored to both trees in the same commit. Reaction-gated skills follow the Riposte precedent and update the pinned gate set; block-triggered draw belongs to the Focus page; stances, aggro, offhand and charge pools to the Tactics programs; stun regimes to the Bludgeon desk; stillness to the Ranged page; itemization to the weapons and enhancement programs; magic shields to the magic schools. Existing tracker issues are cited, never re-filed.

Test surface

New: a ShieldBalanceTests golden suite (asset expression pins for all seven runes, the sixteen-term mastery census, the innate table, the shield archetype table) plus block-math unit cases (roll shape, front-arc skip, empty-hand fallback, bow-only branch, damage ceiling, the resistance double-count) and the first Blockable-flag manifest sweep. Extended: the reaction gate catalog's exact-set test when S19 lands; the held-stance and combo-window suites already covering Dig In and Shield Smash. Every tester-verification task for this school states that a working shield must be equipped, because the tester skill overlay grants levels, not gear.
